The Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians– your partner and champion of internal medicine – is coming to Houston this November! We invite you to join us, and your friends and colleagues from all across our great state, for this exceptional meeting. With an emphasis on Team Practice in Medicine, we invite you to experience a meeting that combines scientific updates, procedural workshops, and the latest news and resources from ACP to provide you with comprehensive tools for your practice.  This year’s annual meeting is planned for November 15–16, at the Hyatt Regency Downtown.

Pre-course sessions will provide the opportunity to obtain credit toward the American Board of Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification. The ABIM’s Self-Evaluation Process Modules on Office-Based Internal Medicine and Hospital-Based Internal Medicine will be offered on Friday, November 14. Seating will be limited to 30 to provide an interactive learning format and audience response system.

The TXACP meeting is not limited to ACP members. Nonmembers are welcome to join us for this important clinical update and to learn about the benefits of membership at the same time. We encourage you to share this information with your colleagues.

Meeting Registration

Registration fee includes all scientific plenary sessions and materials, Saturday cocktail reception, continental breakfasts and refreshment breaks, luncheon on Saturday, and CME certificate. An additional registration fee is required for the ABIM SEP Module pre-course.

Online registration is now open, but make sure to register by Friday, October 17th as there will be a $20 late fee added to your total. Registration will close for the meeting on Friday, November 8th at midnight. Any registrations processed after that time, will have to be processed onsite. The meeting registration desk will open at 7:00 am, Saturday, November 15th, and you are welcome to register on site.

There is an additional $20 fee for registering onsite at the meeting. Please note: the late fee does not apply to medical students.  Registrations received prior to October 17th will receive confirmation in the mail. A full refund (minus a $50 administration fee) will be provided to registrants who cancel their registration in writing prior to October 17th. No refunds will be provided for cancellations received after October 17th.

ABIM Modules

Obtain credit toward your American Board of Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification (MOC) on Friday, November 14, at the TXACP Annual Scientific Meeting. TXACP faculty will present two ABIM Self Evaluation Process Modules (2013 Updates in Office-Based Internal Medicine and Hospital-Based Internal Medicine) as pre-courses to the annual chapter meeting. Each SEP module contains 20 to 25 multiplechoice questions to be completed through group discussion and with the help of an automated audience response system.

Upon completion of the session, attendees will be able to submit their answers to ABIM for scoring and points toward the self-evaluation of knowledge requirement associated
with the MOC Program.

Advance registration is required and will be limited to 30 participants each session.

The fee for each Learning Session is $75 for members, and $125 for nonmembers.



Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Apply updated knowledge of internal medicine to clinical practice.

  • Understand recent advances in internal medicine

  • Understand implications of working in teams and team dynamics as a strategy in a changing healthcare environment

  • Identify barriers to team development in patient care, education and research

  • Understand who regulates driving in Texas for persons with medical conditions and the process if a patient does not voluntarily obey the driving restrictions including physician liability when advising

  • Understand the probable etiology of Beethoven's hearing loss and how it affected his compositions and diagnosing and treating illnesses that affect performing artists 


Special Events for Medical Students and Residents

Medical Students and Residents are invited to participate in all annual meeting events, especially those activities designed specifically for their interests. Although registration is free for students, all attendees must register for the meeting in advance.

Five winners of the regional Residents’ clinical vignette competitions will present their cases in the statewide competition during the plenary session on Saturday morning. The winner will advance to ACP’s national competition in Boston, MA, in April  30th - May 2nd 2015.

Medical students will present clinical vignettes in a competition, with the winners to receive cash prizes. The student who achieves first place will be eligible for the national competition at the 2015 ACP annual meeting.

First and second-place winners will be named in the Medical Students’ and Residents’ poster competitions. The fiftieth annual Doctors’DilemmaTM statewide competition will begin with a lunch on Sunday. All Texas residency programs are invited to register their team in advance and come join in the fun. 1:35pm On Being a Doctor: "Who's my patient?  Living in a world of increasingly fragmented care, increased handoffs, and sub specialization” The winning author of the On Being a Doctor writing competition for Medical Student/Resident members will give a
             10-minute oral presentation during the Plenary Session.
2:45–4:45pm Residents’ Poster Exhibition and Competition
4:45–5:45pm Cocktail Reception and Awards Presentations (Winners of the poster and clinical vignette competitions will be announced)

Volunteer to Become an Abstract Reviewer and/or Judge

We would like to invite you to participate as a Medical Student and/or Resident reviewer and judge for the 2014 TXACP Annual Meeting poster competition.


Abstract Reviewer and Judge Information


Abstract reviewers must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a current member of the ACP (non-Medical Student/Resident Member)
  • Complete the Volunteer Form before Wednesday, August 20th. Be sure to indicate whether you would like to review for the Medical Students and/or Residents.
  • Approximately 8-12 abstracts will be assigned to each reviewer (this is dependent on the amount of abstracts received)
  • Abstracts will be evaluated based on common criteria and score cards will be sent along with assigned abstracts
  • Must be available to review assigned abstracts before 5pm Thursday, October 2nd. Abstract review period will be from Monday, September 8th-Thursday, October 2nd.


Onsite Judges must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a current member of the ACP (non-Medical Student/Resident Member)
  • Complete the Volunteer Form before Wednesday, August 20th. Be sure to indicate whether you would like to review for the Medical Students and/or Residents
  • Be registered for the 2014 TXACP Annual Meeting November 15th-16th hosted at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston
  • Approximately 5-8 posters will be assigned to each judge (this is dependent to the amount of poster accepted to present
  • A judging packet will be picked up at registration onsite at the hotel
  • Judges may work independently or as a group
  • Must be available to judge the Medical Student competition Saturday, November 15th at 8:30-10:30am
  • And/or be available to judge the Resident competition Saturday, November 15th at 2:45-4:45pm.


Your contribution to this event is valued not only by the Medical Students and Residents, but by TXACP staff and your fellow TXACP members as well.
