Build the Future of Internal Medicine

Lay the foundation...

You will always remember that one experience, mentor, or patient who convinced you to choose a career as an internist. Through the General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program, Texas medical students can supplement their traditional medical education and training by spending up to four weeks with an internist like yourself.

' My student was a delight to work with. I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the program and look at it as an honor."
- Dr. J, Corpus Christi

...for students ...

Medical students want first-hand knowledge of what life is like as a practicing physician.

A preceptorship is:

  • An observation-based training experience with a physician in a community practice, geared primarily toward pre-clinical, first- and second-year Texas medical students.
  • Typically four weeks in length.
  • An opportunity for students to observe and assist with various aspects of clinical practice and office management, as well as participate in social and civic activities of practicing physicians.
  • Up to four weeks in length.
  • State-funded. Students receive reimbursements to offset living expenses incurred during the preceptorship.

' This preceptorship made it fun to practice again. It was great to share experiences and skills with an interested, eager student. Thanks!" - Dr R., Houston

...and reap the rewards

Preceptors enjoy renewed enthusiasm for medical practice through teaching students new skills and sharing medical values with them. Office staff and patients also enjoy being involved with the student's education. Additional benefits include:

  • Personal and professional enrichment through contributing to medical education in Texas.
  • Increased team-building skills among office staff.
  • Respect and admiration from patients and peers.
  • A preceptor training program offering continuing medical education credit, faculty course manual and quarterly newsletter.
  • Recognition for volunteer service at state and local levels.

Build a bright future for Internal Medicine

You can help share the future of Internal Medicine by mentoring a student interested in a primary care career.

' I believe my student will make an excellent internist -- the type of caring physician I would like to have working with me."
- Dr.H., Webster

To qualify, you must:

  • Practice general internal medicine in a community-based clinic, office, or hospital setting.
  • Provide longitudinal and comprehensive care to adolescent and adult patients.
  • Possess a current Texas medical license with no restrictions from the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Participate in the program as a volunteer.

' I do better work with a student around. Send me more!"
- Dr. H., Dallas
